STUDYING SICK BUILDINGS.

Summary

REPORTS THAT FOLLOWING COMPLAINTS OF POOR WORKING CONDITIONS IN A LARGE OPEN-PLAN OFFICE, A QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY AND A SERIES OF PHYSICAL AND MICROBIOLOGICAL MEASUREMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT. THESE REVEALED JUSTIFIABLE DISSATISFACTION WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND THE OCCURRENCE OF SICK BUILDING SYNDROME. DESCRIBES A NUMBER OF MODIFICATIONS MADE TO THE BUILDING SERVICES OF THE OFFICE. NOTES THAT A SECOND SURVEY REVEALED THAT THE MODIFICATIONS HAD PRODUCED A BETTER PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT, BUT THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN THE PREVALENCE OF THE SYMPTOMS FORMING SICK BUILDING SYNDROME. SUGGESTS SOME POSSIBLE REASONS FOR THIS FAILURE. (INT. BUILD. SERV. ABSTR., GB., 25, N 1, 1990/01-02, 90-00260.
