The authors review the design, manufacture, and testing of the coldmass of the superconducting hexapole/solenoid for the source SERSE (superconducting electron cyclotron resonance ion source) built in a joint venture between the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Catania, Italy, and CEA/DRFMC (Département de la Recherche Fondamentale sur la Matière Condensée), Grenoble (France).
