Summary
PREVIOUS WORK HAS INDICATED AN UNEXPECTED FACTOR IN BOILING HEAT TRANSFER AT LOW FLOW RATES IN OFFSET STRIP FIN HEAT EXCHANGERS. INSTEAD OF DECREASING TOWARDS THE VALUE FOR SINGLE-PHASE LIQUID FLOW, THE COEFFICIENT APPEARS TO REACH A MINIMUM AT ABOUT TWICE THE EXPECTED VALUE. THE PAPER OFFERS THE SUGGESTION THAT THIS IS DUE TO SURFACE TENSION HOLDING BACK VAPOUR BUBBLES WITHIN THE FIN MATRIX, CREATING A FORM OF SLUG FLOW. A PROOF IS PRODUCED AND A MODEL CREATED FOR THE PREDICTION OF THIS EFFECT. D.W.H.
