Summary

Buildings use energy to provide comfort and wellbeing to their occupants. So if the term “energy efficiency” describes the relationship between occupant comfort/wellbeing (output) and energy use (input), will the gains from future improvements in efficiency be enough to satisfy ever-increasing occupant expectations and still address the imperative to reduce energy use? Is the pursuit of ever-improving occupant comfort/wellbeing a double-edged sword? In the future, will building occupants be happier and more satisfied in their greener buildings, or will we give up energy savings in the pursuit of “thermal delight”, the HVAC industry’s elusive lost city of gold?
