The health effects of humidity extremes.
Author(s) : WALTON M. D., WARNER P. O.
Summary
Careful examination of over 35 years of scientific literature has revealed conflicting results and misinterpretations of data regarding the effects of humidity extremes and the benefits of humidified air. The review concludes that: 1) excessive humidity results in the microorganisms which cause allergic reactions; 2) airborne viruses and bacteria which survive better at either humidity extreme can affect the rate of incidence of respiratory infection; 3) synergistic effects exist between humidity and chemical contaminants such as formaldehyde and sulphur dioxide; 4) low humidity decreases nasal mucus flow, increasing the risk of respiratory infection; and 5) skin and eye irritations are induced at very low relative humidities.
