Summary

An essential link in the cold chain, transport of goods under controlled-temperature conditions has become a speciality for certain French coach builders (who are in a strong position on the European market); exports of this type of refrigerated vehicle coachwork represents 20% of total coach builders' exports. Over 3/4 of French production is performed by 2 companies. Following strong growth in the early 1990s, controlled-temperature vehicles now represent a renewal market; health regulations specify that insulated bodies must be replaced within 6 years and renewed only once thereafter, for a 3-year period. The expansion of food transport in urban areas is generating strong growth of light delivery vehicles providing controlled-temperature conditions.
