Summary

THERE ARE SOME SPECIAL FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED IN THE USE OF LOW-ALLOY MILD STEEL FOR CRYOGENIC CONTAINERS, AS COMPARED TO ALL-NICHROME STEEL CONSTRUCTIONS. THEY INCLUDE THE WELDING PROCESS, SINCE NICHROME STEEL AND UNALLOYED MILD STEEL HAVE TO BE WELDED TOGETHER, THE PROTECTION OF THE EXTERNAL SURFACES AGAINST CORROSION, AND THE REDUCTION OF THE HYDROGEN PARTIAL PRESSURE OF THE RESIDUAL GAS IN THE INSULATION SPACE WHICH INCREASES CONSIDERABLY COMPARED WITH ALL-NICHROME STEEL CONSTRUCTION LEADING TO AN IMPAIRED INSULATION QUALITY. MILD STEEL CONSTRUCTIONS AFFORD COST SAVINGS OF 12 PERCENT AS AGAINST CHROMIUM-NICKEL-STEEL TANKS.
