THERMAL AND MAGNETIC CORRELATION IN APPARENT STRAIN IN KARMA STRAIN GAUGES IN CRYOGENIC ENVIRONMENTS.

Author(s) : FERRERO C., MARINARI C

Summary

THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF LARGE-SIZE SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETS FOR RESEARCH WORK ON FUSION GAVE RISE TO SEVERAL PROBLEMS CONCERNING THE PROPERTIES OF SUPERCONDUCTING COMPOSITE CABLES AND OF MATERIALS FOR MAGNET CONSTRUCTION, ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF COMPARING DESIGN CALCULATIONS WITH ACTUAL OPERATING CONDITIONS. IN CONNECTION WITH MAGNET CONSTRUCTION, THE PARTICULAR SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MEASUREMENT OF STRAINS BROUGHT ABOUT IS POINTED OUT BY THERMAL AND ELECTRODYNAMIC SOURCES IN SUPERCONDUCTING COILS AND SUPPORT STRUCTURES ; STRAIN GAUGES HAVE CONSEQUENTLY TO BE CHARACTERISED VS TEMPERATURE AND MAGNETIC FIELDS SO AS TO OBTAINTHE VALUES OF ACTUAL STRESSES IN A STRUCTURE FROM STRAIN MEASUREMENTS UNDER WORKING CONDITIONS.
