A SURVEY IS GIVEN OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF REFRIGERANT COMPRESSORS WHICH IN THE SEVENTIES WAS PRIMARILY DIRECTED TOWARDS A REDUCTION IN WEIGHT AND LATER AIMED AT REDUCING THE POWER REQUIREMENT. DESCRIBED ALSO ARE PRESENT TRENDS IN THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF RECIPROCATING PISTON COMPRESSORS, ESPECIALLY HIGHLY STRESSED COMPONENTS AND THE MANY ACTIVITIES UNDER WAY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ROTARY PISTON COMPRESSORS INCLUDING NEW PROFILES FOR SCREW-TYPE COMPRESSORS AND CONTROLLING LEAKAGE AND FRICTION LOSSES OF VOLUTE AND LOBE-TYPE COMPRESSORS.
