Turbo-Brayton cryocoolers for space.
Author(s) : ZAGAROLA M., McCORMICK J., SIXSMITH H., et al.
Summary
A reverse-Brayton cryocooler using turbomachines has been installed on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The cryocooler uses a cryogenic circulating loop to cool the detectors for the near-infrared camera and multi-object spectrograph (NICMOS) to 77 K. This technology is now being extended to lower temperature space applications. The effort involves further reductions in the size of the key components in order to reduce mass and achieve acceptable performance. The paper describes the NICMOS cooler and early operating results. Scaling issues, a preliminary design, and performance estimates for a 6 K turbo-Brayton cooler are presented.
