Summary

During the efforts for EU membership, Turkey has also gained great success in its economy. At the end of August 2007, 30 year lasting hyper-inflation dropped to 7.4% (12 months, consumer index) and 3.7% (production index), annual economic growth rate which have seen 10% was 6.7% in the first quarter of 2007, 3.9% in the 2nd quarter. During the first half of 2007, construction was the sector with fastest growth, namely 16.1%. Construction is followed by industry, of which growth was 5.2% during the same period. The fact that Turkey is growing for the last 22 quarters has proven that this growth is sustainable National export broke all time record and is reaching EUR 70 billion despite overvalued Turkish currency, Turkey became 22nd exporter and 15th importer (EUR 96 billion) of the world. Thanks to all these facts, Turkey became a major player in European League. For the year 2006, both export and import of Turkey were observed to increase 16 and 17%, respectively.
