Summary

EXPRESSIONS FOR THE SENSIBLE AND LATENT HEAT FLOW RATES, AS WELL AS THE RESULTING TOTAL ENERGY FLOW RATE, ARE DERIVED FOR THE FOUR POSSIBLE COMBINATIONS OF DIRECTIONS OF HEAT AND MASS FLOWS. THE VARIATIONS OF THE HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER COEFFICIENTS CAN BE DESCRIBED FOR ALL CASES BY A SINGLE RELATIONSHIP, IF THE SIGN OF HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER CORRESPONDING TO THE DEFINITIONS OF FOURIER'S AND FICK'S LAW ARE USED. THESE RELATIONSHIPS ARE EXTENDED IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEY ARE VALID FOR ARBITRARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF COUNTERCURRENT DIFFUSING FLOWS AS WELL AS FOR THE WELL-KNOWN CASE OF UNILATERAL DIFFUSION.
