Summary
Natural ventilation systems have recently been promoted as efficient mechanisms for cooling and ventilating indoor spaces without producing pollutants or requiring the use of finite resources. In this study, we investigated the relationship between internal and external conditions and ventilation characteristics of a solar chimney as well as the energy savings associated with the use of this system in a four-story school. We found that increasing levels of insolation increased the temperature differential inside the building/solar chimney shaft and outside the building, ultimately resulting in an increased chimney displacement volume. In contrast, we found that increased insolation increased the vertical temperature differential within the chimney shaft and decreased the chimney displacement volume. Finally, we determined that the solar chimney resulted in a 55.9% savings in energy usage compared to the master plan in intermediate season. We conclude that the solar chimney achieves an effect of natural ventilation.
