Abu Dhabi’s Department of Transport (DoT) is to install additional air-conditioned bus shelters in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the western region.
When 20 air-conditioned bus shelters were installed in 2009, the DoT at that time announced that it planned to install a total of 550 shelters across the emirate by 2011 at a cost of Dh100 million.
Around 80 shelters are already operational in the emirate, and it is expected that all 550 shelters will be operational in 2013. The bus shelters maintain temperatures between 22°C and 24°C for commuters. Each shelter provides seating for 8 persons and can accommodate one wheelchair user and 8 standing commuters.
