As of 2019, the EU countries will be obliged to collect and recycle up to 85% of refrigerators, freezers and other electrical and electronic equipment following the endorsement of the revised Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive by the European Parliament in January 2012.

As of 2016, the legislation imposes a minimum recovery rate of 45% of electronic and electrical waste (e-waste) put on sale in the market over the 3 preceding years.
By 2019, this rate will gradually increase to 65% i.e. 85% of all e-waste generated on the territory will have to be collected.
