Bangladesh Kicks Off Green Cooling Initiative to Phase Out HFCs in Line with Montreal Protocol
Bangladesh initiates efforts towards green cooling solutions with a workshop addressing the transition from HFCs to eco-friendly refrigerants.
On May 9, 2024, Bangladesh began activities under the Green Cooling Initiative (GCI) III with a workshop in Dhaka titled "Transition towards a Greener Cooling Approach."
Hosted by the Department of Environment (DoE) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the event gathered key stakeholders from the refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) sector.
The workshop, attended by the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) as Chief Guest, focused on the importance of transitioning to green cooling technologies. This shift is necessary to meet the Montreal Protocol targets for phasing out hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
Key discussion points included the need for workforce training to support the market introduction of air conditioners using natural refrigerants. GCI III, commissioned by Germany's BMUV and implemented by GIZ, aims to provide technical support, policy advice, technology transfer, and capacity building to facilitate this transition.
