Cooling Without Warming: Energy-Efficient Heat Pumps and Air Conditioning

As Europe accelerates its transition toward a climate-neutral economy, the role of heating and cooling technologies has become central to achieving the objectives of the European Green Deal and the REPowerEU plan. Cooling and refrigeration account for a significant share of global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, yet they remain among the most underrepresented topics in mainstream energy policy discourse.

The International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR), as the leading intergovernmental organisation dedicated to the science and technology of refrigeration, heat pumps, and air conditioning, is committed to bridging this gap. With mounting pressure on energy systems driven by climate change, population growth, and the global cold chain, the need for energy-efficient and low-carbon cooling solutions has never been more urgent.

The European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) offered a unique platform to convene policymakers, researchers, industry leaders, and civil society to advance this conversation.

→ Highlight the critical link between cooling technologies and Europe's energy efficiency and decarbonisation goals
→ Present the latest advances in heat pump and air conditioning technologies, with a focus on energy performance and climate impact
→ Identify policy levers and technology pathways to accelerate the adoption of sustainable cooling solutions across EU Member States
→ Foster interdisciplinary dialogue between technical experts, policymakers, and energy practitioners
→ Strengthen the IIR's role as a key knowledge partner in EU-level energy policy discussions

A Truly Global Reach

The webinar attracted participants from 76 countries across all continents, with strong representation from Europe, Asia, and Africa, reflecting the global relevance of sustainable cooling as a policy and technology challenge.
