Every four years during the International Congress of Refrigeration (ICR), the IIR offers a series of prestigious scientific awards. The IIR Scientific Awards recognize those who have made outstanding contributions to the field of refrigeration or have completed exceptional research work.

Once again, the IIR is delighted to announce the winners of awards to be presented during the awards banquet to be held at the 24th IIR International Congress of Refrigeration ICR2015 in Yokohama, Japan.

IIR Medal of Merit

This is a new high-level honour for a person with outstanding achievements in the promotion of the IIR, who also serves as a role model for the younger generations. Although our policy is to award only one IIR Medal of Merit at each IIR Congress, we had a number of outstanding candidates and chose two who have made truly exceptional contributions to the IIR.

This year the prestigious IIR Medal of Merit goes to Hein AURACHER (Germany) and Alberto CAVALLINI (Italy).

IIR Gustav Lorentzen Medal

This prize is awarded to a person with outstanding and original achievements in academic or industrial research, innovation or development, in all fields of refrigeration, thus promoting creativity and renewal in the fields of expertise of the IIR.

This year the Gustav Lorentzen Medal goes to Reinhard RADERMACHER (USA), see photo, Member of Commission B2 - Refrigerating Equipement, for his instrumental work in the ever changing search for alternative refrigerants as well as his numerous and noteworthy contributions to the field of Refrigeration Sciences.

IIR Science and Technology Medal

The medal is awarded for outstanding achievements over an extended period of time in science and/or technology in one of the fields of competence of the IIR.

This year the Science and Technology Medal goes to Shigeru KOYAMA (Japan) Honorary Member of Commission B2, for the important roles he has played in scientific and practical fields of refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pumps. He has made great contributions, especially in the field of heat exchangers and refrigeration/heat-pump systems.

IIR Young Researchers Awards

These prizes, eight in all, are awarded for outstanding research work (thesis, dissertation, or various shorter publications of similar importance, if taken together) performed by young researchers on subjects in the domain of competence of the IIR. This year the laureates are:
