Dr. Yunho Hwang and team earn 3rd place in Vicinity Energy-MEIA Ideation Program for heat pump innovation

Former president of IIR Commission B1, and research professor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Energy Engineering (CEEE), Dr. Yunho Hwang, and his team, have been awarded third place in the Vicinity Energy–MEIA Ideation Program for their innovative solution to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

The Vicinity Energy-MEIA Ideation Program is a fast-paced innovation sprint designed to accelerate real‑world decarbonisation technologies by transforming technical concepts into viable pilots, partnerships and deployment pathways.

During the Ideation Program Finale, Dr. Hwang’s and team members Jan Muehlbauer, Arunjoy Baruah and Md Mehrab Hossen Siam presented an energy-efficient industrial-scale heat pump using multi‑stage compression to reduce compressor workload and cut energy use, offering a promising solution for district heating systems.

On behalf of the IIR, congratulations to Dr. Yunho Hwang and his team on this achievement!
