France: domestic refrigerator sales down 7% in 2024
According to Gifam, a grouping of household appliance brands, domestic refrigerator sales in France declined in 2024 for the second consecutive year.
In February, as it does every year, Gifam, the grouping of household appliance brands, presented its report on France’s household appliance sector for the previous year [1]. See our previous article on this topic.
Departing from several years of historical growth, the household appliance market shrank in 2024 for the second consecutive year, impacted by both the downturn in the property market and weather conditions.
In 2024, France’s household appliance market generated total sales revenue of € 9.6 billion, down by 1% in volume and 3.9% in value compared with 2023.
Refrigeration, which accounted for 28% of the household appliance market by value, suffered the biggest drop, with a decrease of 7.7% in value compared with 2023. Declines in value were seen for all domestic refrigeration appliances — refrigerators (–7.0%), freezers (–9.3%), and wine coolers (–16.3%).
According to Gifam, weather conditions in 2024 affected sales of certain products. For instance, bad weather and the highest humidity levels in 30 years boosted sales of home comfort appliances, such as dehumidifiers (+63%) and mobile radiators (+13.5%). Conversely, refrigerator sales were hurt by the gloomy weather during summer.
The market research organisation GfK believes that innovation could drive value creation. Indeed, GfK has noted an increase in sales of connected appliances across all categories — refrigeration, cooking, and washing [2].
