Highlight from COP13/MOP36 - Day 1
At a side event during COP13/MOP36 in Bangkok, IIR and Cool Up Programme convened global leaders to address challenges in energy-efficient refrigeration and cooling. Discussions focused on reducing emissions, innovative governance, and sustainable technologies, underscoring the significance of promoting best practices and workforce empowerment.
Bangkok, October 28, 2024 – Today, during COP13/MOP36, IIR and Cool Up Programme hosted a side event focused on enhancing energy efficiency in the refrigeration and cooling sectors. This gathering brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and experts to discuss challenges and innovations.
The event opened with remarks from Yosr Allouche, Director General of the IIR and Jakob Hoffmann from the Cool Up Programme, who emphasised the crucial role of efficient cooling solutions in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As global temperatures rise, the need for sustainable cooling practices is more urgent than ever.
The event was chaired and moderated by Souhir Hammami (IIR), with panellists Andrea Voigt (Danfoss), Hubert Zan (Ghana), Marco Buoni (AREA), Marco Duran (IIR), and Isroiljon Khasanov (UNDP), who explored the current emissions landscape, the increasing need of refrigeration and energy efficiency to overcome the challenges and barriers of sustainable refrigeration.
Governance emerged as a key theme, with panellists sharing best practices for collaboration across ministries and organisations. They highlighted the benefits of certifications and Minimum Energy Performance Standards, which enhance accountability within the industry. The success of twinning workshops demonstrated the potential for replicating knowledge-sharing models globally.
Innovation was a central focus, as experts highlighted successful approaches to developing sustainable cooling solutions. They discussed funding and investment opportunities that support energy-efficient projects and the need for strategic partnerships to maximise impact. Hands-on capacity building for local stakeholders was emphasised to ensure effective implementation of advanced cooling technologies.
An engaging Q&A session allowed participants to delve deeper into the discussions, fostering a sense of community committed to advancing energy efficiency. This interactive dialogue underscored the importance of collaborative solutions that address immediate cooling needs while contributing to long-term sustainability.
The event concluded with closing remarks by Bjorn Palm, who reiterated the importance of the IIR-Cool Up Programme partnership, which aims to empower the refrigeration and air conditioning workforce for future transitions.
As the global community moves forward, the insights and collaborations formed at this event will be crucial in shaping effective strategies for enhancing energy efficiency in the cooling sector. The IIR remains dedicated to fostering dialogue, advocating for innovative solutions, and paving the way toward a sustainable future in refrigeration and cooling.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the speakers for their valuable contributions and insights during this side event!
