In numbers: Your International Journal of Refrigeration

The International Journal of Refrigeration (IJR) may only be one link in a long chain of high-quality scientific information, but its importance is greater than ever.

The International Journal of Refrigeration: striving to provide you quality papers swiftly

The impact factor of the International Journal of Refrigeration increases for a consecutive year

We all know that the nature of retrieving information is changing, and with it, journals are changing. There are several reasons for this. The amount of scientific information being produced is ever increasing. Accessing information seems to be simpler than ever, and journals are no longer the only – maybe even not the preferred – source of information. For most of us, being informed is not a problem - but being correctly informed is.

The International Journal of Refrigeration (IJR) may only be one link in a long chain of high-quality scientific information, but its importance is greater than ever.

Providing quality swiftly

Of course, assuring quality is not easy: papers must be published more quickly and in greater number, but the review process must remain thorough and diligent. Electronic publishing is a way of speeding up the publishing process. For the IJR:

  • submission to acceptance takes about 21 weeks
  • print publication time is 35 weeks from submission
  • web publication time is about two months faster than print (i.e. 27 weeks).

The authors and we, the publisher and editors, must thank you, the reviewers, for this, as the reviewers carry the largest part of the burden, both when it comes to speed and diligence.

Getting back to the numbers, based on the 2016 Elsevier Report:

  • 818 papers were submitted in 2016
  • Submissions rose by 20% compared to 2015 (684)
  • Approximately 50% of the submitted papers are rejected. We ask our reviewers to be strict: an increase of quantity should not come at the cost of quality.

The global breakdown of accepted papers shows:

  • Asia continues to dominate, with 51%
  • Followed by Europe, with 27%
  • The Northern Americas, 11%
  • Latin America and the Caribbean, 6%
  • Africa contributed roughly 4%
  • Australia and Oceania, 1%.

A rise in papers from Africa and Latin America would be welcome!

Publish your paper in Open Access

One important point to mention is Open Access. You can also publish in Open Access in the IJR. Only one author used this option last year. However, in Europe at least it is becoming a condition of funding bodies to publish in Open Access.

The increasing impact of the IJR

Lastly, the Impact Factor of the IJR has again increased, from 2.291 in 2015 to 2.779 in 2016. The IJR is ranked 22nd out of 130 Mechanical Engineering journals and 12th out of 58 Thermodynamics journals. This means that we are doing very well – the IJR is in the top 20%. I am happy about this - however, it is much more important that all these journals are dedicated to bringing forward mankind with high-quality, unbiased, objective science. We all are part of this quest.
