France bans gas boilers in new buildings in favour of heat pumps

To address skyrocketing energy prices, the French government is intensifying its electrification strategy by prohibiting the installation of gas boilers in new buildings by the end of 2026.

On April 10, 2026, the French Prime Minister unveiled a series of measures designed to reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.

In the real estate sector, the French administration proposes:

  • A ban on gas boilers in new constructions, effective from January 1, 2027.

  • Gradually phasing out gas heating in two million social housing units by 2050.

  • Installing one million heat pumps by 2030.

Therefore, it will no longer be possible to install gas boilers in new buildings after the end of 2026. Public subsidies for private individuals will be made available to replace gas and oil boilers with heat pumps.

The French government believes that these actions will lead to lower heating bills. In total, 85 terawatt-hours of gas are expected to be replaced by energy produced in France by 2030, which is equivalent to 20% of France’s current gas imports.
