The IIR is proud to announce the official launch of the AGRI-COOL website, which will provide a central access point for information on this pioneering project to address the challenges of food security, climate resilience and agricultural sustainability in Africa.
Following the official start of AGRI-COOL last June, the IIR is pleased to announce the launch of the website dedicated to the project, an innovative initiative designed to tackle critical agricultural challenges in Africa. The project offers sustainable, cost-effective solutions to combat food waste, boost food security, and reduce the impacts of climate change. AGRI-COOL implements advanced technologies such as :
- Food storage and cooling containers, featuring photovoltaic technology, thermal energy storage using phase-change materials, refrigeration systems and smart control strategies
- Pilot tests in rural communities in South Africa, Cape Verde, Somalia and Zimbabwe
- A full life-cycle assessment following the cradle-to-grave approach to demonstrate the system’s environmental and climate impact, in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement
- Locally tailored advanced training programs for farmers, technicians, and engineers to ensure installation, operation, and maintenance of the systems.
AGRI-COOL involves 13 partners, coordinated by the University of Twente (Netherlands), and is organised into 8 Work Packages. IIR plays a pivotal role as the leader of Work Package 8 ‘Stakeholder Engagement, Dissemination, and Outreach’, raising stakeholder awareness, enhancing the project’s visibility, and documenting its progress. The AGRI-COOL website is a key tool in achieving these objectives, providing centralised access to the project’s innovations for researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders seeking to leverage these technologies in their future endeavours. The website features the following:
