Markets: Worldwide frozen chips market on the increase

In 2001-2002, frozen chip exports from the three main exporting countries - The Netherlands, Canada and the USA - reached an all-time peak of 2.22 million tonnes. This represents a 10% increase compared with 1999-2000. The Netherlands exported 990 000 tonnes, mainly to the European Union. Canada, exporting to the USA and South-East Asia, is now in competition with Australia and New Zealand, that exported 110 000 tonnes to South-East Asia. The USA not only exports to Japan and China, but is also a big consumer; however, for the first time, a 7% decrease in consumption was experienced, in the USA, over the 2001-2002 period.
