Member news: Danfoss hosts global leaders in sustainable heating & cooling

In April, Danfoss hosted a week dedicated to sustainable heating and cooling. The second day featured Danfoss RACHP Symposium, where IIR Director General Yosr Allouche delivered a keynote presentation, “Sustainable refrigeration as an opportunity for society”.

From April 7 to 11, Danfoss proudly hosted a week dedicated to sustainable heating and cooling at its headquarters in Nordborg, Denmark, facilitating a platform for collaboration between science, industry, and governments. This significant gathering brought together the world’s leading experts to drive impact and progress in decarbonising the cold chain, buildings, and industry.

 

  • Refrigeration, Air-Conditioning, and Heat Pump symposium

The week began with the Refrigeration, Air-Conditioning, and Heat Pump symposium, where around 100 attendees from 28 countries and 5 continents explored practical applications of sustainable heating and cooling technologies through site visits, expert keynotes, and technology dialogues. IIR Director General Yosr Allouche delivered a keynote presentation on “Sustainable refrigeration as an opportunity for society”, exploring how innovation and cross-sector collaboration can accelerate the transition toward climate neutrality. As a whole, the symposium underlined Danfoss’ commitment to sustainability and innovation, showcasing, among others, its carbon-neutral headquarters, achieved in 2022.

 

  • Refrigeration, Air-Conditioning, and Heat Pump Technical Options Committee meeting

Following the symposium, the prestigious Refrigeration, Air-Conditioning, and Heat Pump Technical Options Committee (RTOC) convened at Danfoss headquarters. This essential advisory body under the Montreal Protocol is responsible for writing the RTOC Assessment Report, which advises Parties to the Montreal Protocol on available technologies and solutions. Over three days, roughly 40 of the world’s leading experts made excellent progress in a collaborative and constructive spirit. The Montreal Protocol, along with its Kigali Amendment, is known as one of the world’s most successful environmental treaties, expected to reduce global temperature rise by up to 0.5°C by 2100.

 

  • Key highlights

Kristian Strand, President of Danfoss Climate Solutions, emphasised the importance of sustainable heating and cooling technologies: “Sustainable heating and cooling is vital for building a resilient society. It enhances public health, supports sustainable economic development, and contributes to a better quality of life for all. And it also makes good business sense. Our headquarters is a perfect example. Alongside carbon neutrality, we achieved significant cost savings and improved operational efficiency – all of this with readily available technology and payback times of typically less than 3 years.”

 

Andrea Voigt, Vice President Global Public Affairs & Sustainability at Danfoss Climate Solutions, highlighted the role of the RTOC: “The RTOC’s work is crucial in advising global parties on the best available technologies and solutions. The progress made during this week emphasised the collaborative spirit and dedication of the world’s leading experts in advancing sustainable heating and cooling.”
