New IIR Working Group on Solid-State Cooling and Heating

Initiated by Andrej Kitanovski (Slovenia), this working group's first objective is to promote international research collaboration in the areas of solid-state cooling, heat pumps, and energy harvesting.

During its meeting on June 9, 2022, the IIR Science and Technology Council validated the creation of a new Working Group (WG) entitled "Solid-State Cooling and Heating" following a proposal by Andrej Kitanovski, IIR Delegate from Slovenia and member of IIR Commission B2 (Refrigeration equipment).

The first objective of this WG is to promote international research collaboration in the areas of solid-state cooling, heat pumps, and energy harvesting, with the aim of providing energy-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for a variety of applications.

This new WG, which will replace the “Magnetic Cooling” WG will cover the following fields, with a focus on engineering:

  • caloric (magnetocaloric, electrocaloric and mechanocaloric) technologies,
  • thermoelectric and spin-caloritronics technologies,
  • solid-state cryocoolers and liquefaction,
  • other solid-state technologies for heating, cooling and energy harvesting.

The IIR Commissions involved in this WG are B2 (Refrigerating equipment),  E2 (Heat pumps, energy recovery) and A1 (Cryophysics, cryotechnics).

Andrej Kitanovski (Slovenia) and Luo Ercang (China) are respectively the President and the Vice-President of this new WG.
