Professional forums on cryo-sciences: Experts and young researchers alike

Although significant progress has been made in cold application in life sciences driven by new solutions in the production, storage and handling of bio-products along the entire production chain all the way up to the end-user, there are still many challenges to overcome.
New challenges in Cold Applications in Life Sciences

An IIR objective to remain an active part in developments in cryo-sciences

Research and development is facing new challenges in tissue cryopreservation, biomaterial processing and the freezing of, for example, pharmaceutical active agents worldwide.

Although significant progress has been made in cold application in life sciences driven by new solutions in the production, storage and handling of bio-products along the entire production chain all the way up to the end-user, there are still many challenges to overcome.

Challenges pushing the field further

One particular challenge is the analysis and yield optimization in pharmaceutical freezing. An efficient tool based on time- and cost-efficient stability analysis allows the development of mathematical models for simulation of protein stability in freezing processes in order to forecast and therefore to minimize product loss.

Other challenges relate to the development of special cryoprotocols for the preservation of native and engineered tissue, or to the research on endogenous or non-toxic cryoprotectants for cryobanking.

For these reasons, and many more, the IIR has made it an objective to remain an active part in developments within this field by providing professional forums during which experts can question theories and converge on ideas.

The next unmissable cryogenics conference

The next important cryogenics event is the 14th Cryogenics 2017 IIR International Conference to be held on May 15-19, 2017 in Dresden (Germany).

This conference, organised with IIR Commissions A1 (Cryophysics, cryoengineering), A2 (Liquefaction and separation of gases) and C1 (Cryobiology, cryomedicine and health products), will also address cryobiology, cryomedicine and related specific problems thereof as well as special equipment and technologies therefor for use below 120 K (-153°C). Find out more.

Discounts on registration fees

In order for our members to take full advantage of our conferences, IIR members now receive a discount on registration equalling up to a one-year individual membership fee.

IIR Workshops on Cyro-sciences in Dresden

To provide an interdisciplinary scientific platform for dialogue and exchange of experiences between representatives from universities, R&D institutes and industry a special two day IIR workshop on Cold Applications in Life Sciences was held on September 8-9 2016 in Dresden (Germany).

This Workshop, a joint event of IIR commissions A1 (Cryophysics and cryoengineering) and C1 (Cryobiology, cryomedicine and health products), was organised by the ILK Dresden Centre for Cryo Competence in Life Sciences following a successful 1st workshop held in 2013 on the Cryoprocessing of Biopharmaceuticals and Biomaterials.

The IIR Workshop on Cold Applications in Life Sciences focused scientifically on new approaches in areas such as cryobiobanking of biologicals, advanced devices and procedures for cryopreservation, as well as the manufacturing of 3D-scaffolds and tissue engineering for different applications.

As an interdisciplinary scientific event the 2nd IIR workshop has shown the variety of new challenges and the new horizons in cold applications in life sciences. It was a successful workshop with interesting presentations and vibrant discussion on topics stimulating new co-operations that welcomed many young researchers, too.” Dr. Ralf Herzog, President of IIR Section A (Cryogenics and liquefied gases).

For your diary: The 3rd IIR workshop is scheduled to take place in September 2018.
