Tribute to Reinhard Radermacher - IIR Honorary Member

It is with profound sadness that we learnt of the passing of Dr. Reinhard Radermacher on January 24, 2025. The International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) extends its deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and all those who were fortunate enough to work with him.

Dr. Radermacher was an esteemed member of the IIR community, where his contributions were invaluable. He served with distinction as President of Commission B2 – Refrigerating Equipment from 2000 to 2003, as a member of Commission B1 – Thermodynamics & Transfer Processes from 1996 to 1999 and was an Honorary Lifetime Member of the organisation. His work in these roles, and throughout his career, has left an indelible mark on the field of refrigeration science and engineering.

A trailblazer in alternative refrigerants, Dr. Radermacher’s innovative research and groundbreaking work earned him global recognition. His passion for sustainable and efficient energy solutions, particularly in heat pumps, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, inspired generations of researchers and practitioners alike. His tireless efforts in these areas culminated in over 600 publications, numerous patents, and a host of academic awards, including the prestigious Gustav Lorentzen Medal in 2015 at the IIR International Congress of Refrigeration in Yokohama.

As Director of the Centre for Environmental Energy Engineering (CEEE) at the University of Maryland, Dr. Radermacher’s academic leadership was an inspiration to countless students and researchers. He was a man who valued collaboration, forging meaningful partnerships across industry, government, and academia. His belief in the power of teamwork and his relentless drive to tackle the challenges of energy and environmental sustainability will continue to shape the future of HVAC&R and related fields.

Dr. Radermacher’s legacy is not only in his extensive academic and professional achievements but also in the many lives he touched through his work. His commitment to developing sustainable heating and cooling solutions has set a standard that we, as a community, will strive to continue. His passing represents a profound loss, but his contributions will live on, guiding us as we build upon the foundations he laid.

In these difficult times, we join his family, friends, and colleagues in mourning his loss. We are forever grateful for the immeasurable impact he had on the refrigeration community and beyond!
