While a typical supermarket in the United States uses about 1600 kg of refrigerant, the new system, Hill Phoenix Second Nature Medium Compact chiller uses only 32 kg, representing a reduction in the refrigerant load of around 98%, which helped it earn the GreenChill Platinum Award, the highest Environmental-Protection-Agency GreenChill partnership award.
Its secret relies on its secondary glycol loops cooling refrigerated cabinets and cold rooms and its freezing cabinets and cold rooms relying on CO2 loops.
Furthermore, a cascade system using medium-temperature glycol to condense the low-temperature CO2, a function typically achieved thanks to HFC refrigerants, allowed for their replacement.
According to Hill Phoenix, this system achieves the lowest refrigeration charge of any refrigeration system on the market.
