University of Chicago – South Campus chiller plant

When the University of Chicago built a new chiller plant, it seized the opportunity to make the new plant functional, high-performance and on display as a work of art. The resulting South Campus chiller plant celebrates technical equipment: all the utility equipment is exposed, and other construction elements such as concrete floors, steel structural elements, ducts, light fixtures and pipes are also visible. The University of Chicago South Campus chiller plant received the 2009 AIA Chicago Chapter Award, the 2008 Chicago Architecture Foundation Patron of The Year Award, and the Midwest Construction’s Best Award.
