World demand for fluorocarbons to rise annually by 3.4% through 2016

According to a recent market report on fluorochemicals by Freedonia, global demand for fluorine containing chemicals is forecast to rise 3.9% per year to 3.5 million tonnes in 2016, valued at USD 19.7 million.
According to a recent market report on fluorochemicals by Freedonia, global demand for fluorine containing chemicals is forecast to rise 3.9% per year to 3.5 million tonnes in 2016, valued at USD 19.7 million.
In the fluorocarbon segment (which includes CFCs, HCFCs and HFCs) demand is expected to rise slower than the overall fluorochemical average until 2016 included.
Fluorocarbons presented an annual growth of 3% between 2006 and 2011, from 1073 to 1242 thousand metric tonnes) and are predicted to grow annually by 3.4% between 2011 and 2016, reaching 1465 thousand metric tonnes in 2016, compared with annual growth figures of 3.3% and 3.9% for overall fluorochemical demand over the same period.
The study also predicts that fluorocarbons will have reached 1670 thousand metric tonnes in 2021.

However, individual shifts are occurring among individual products, mostly related to restrictions imposed by the Montreal Protocol. HCFC demand is predicted to decline in the near future.
On the other hand, demand for HFCs grew considerably from 2001 to 2011 and should continue, due to their role as replacements for HCFCs in the developing world. However, concerns over the global warming potential (GWP) of HFCs will begin to limit demand, particularly in Western Europe, presenting opportunities for low-GWP HFO fluorocarbons to penetrate the market.
