Résumé

Despite continuing scientific uncertainty, evidence that current fishing practices are unsustainable is mounting. Warnings about overfishing and the potential threat to food security among the poor are being taken increasingly seriously at the national and international levels. Recent years have seen a flurry of agreements to improve fisheries management. However, there is strong resistance to downsizing the world's fishing fleets both in rich countries, where local communities and traditions may be at stake, and in poorer ones where fish are also of fundamental importance for food supply and fishing is one of few sources of livelihood in coastal regions.
