Résumé

This paper presents the first part of a project to develop a R-744 commercial single-door bottle cooler that is cost competitive and matches the performance of a typical cost optimised R-404A system. A prototype was developed with components easily available on the market; this system consists of a single-stage alternative hermetic compressor (1 cm3 displacement), low-cost fin and tube evaporator and gas-cooler, an internal heat exchanger and an expansion valve controlled by the refrigerant temperature at the gas cooler outlet. Energy efficiency of the new system was compared with the one of the same appliance employing conventional technology and the first tests, before design optimisation, have demonstrated that its COP is lower than the one achieved with R-404A, but rather close to it, while R-134a is performing far better. Different possibilities of improving the energy efficiency of the CO2 system are analysed and the guidelines for optimising the design of the critical components are illustrated.
