Résumé

The environmental load due to the transportation process of fishery products is focused in this article. An attempt to quantify the environmental load owing to the transportation processes of mackerel imported from Norway and harvested in Japan is made by means of life cycle inventory analysis. Interviews of suppliers and transporters of fishery products and statistical data are the main sources of foreground data. The result indicates that the amount of CO2 emission of Norwegian mackerel is about twice as large as that harvested in Japan. However, there is an idea that the larger environmental load would be acceptable because Norwegian mackerel is preferred to Japanese mackerel by Japanese consumers. Therefore, the quantification of value of the mackerels is made by means of the contingent valuation method, one of the economic approaches. As a result, it is confirmed that the environmental load of the Norwegian mackerel is thought to be reduced by considering its value, though it is still larger than that of Japanese mackerel.
