Résumé

Today, the African refrigeration industry is not yet aware of the future stakes arising from the Montreal Protocol. However, because it is becoming increasingly difficult to import new plant and because running cost are high (high price of kilowatthour and rising maintenance costs), local technicians will have to learn better management and to find innovative products making use of local resources. In the first section of this paper, a brief rundown of difficulties encountered in buying and running refrigerating plant in a few African countries is given. The examples selected all concern cold stores for fruit and vegetables in Burkina Faso. In the second section, the author analyzes a few aspects of the impact of CFC phase out in Africa, and the third section looks at future perspectives in the context of CFC phase out and the refrigerated foodstuffs market in Africa.
