Mesures d'économie d'énergie instaurées dans le secteur agro-alimentaire portugais.

Energy saving measures on the Portuguese agro-food industry sector.

Résumé

The agro-food industry was identified as one of the sectors with the greatest potential to increase its energy efficiency. However, in the Portuguese case, due to its highly fragmented and small-sized enterprise structure, the vast majority of companies are not considered intensive energy facilities. Thus, they are not obligated to conduct regularly energy audits and implement rationalization plans. This situation ends up easily leading to companies not properly knowing their energy consumption behaviour, and to energy misuse and waste being common practices. This paper present and analyses several issues identified during the carrying out energy audits to eleven companies, located in the central region of Portugal and belonging to six agro-food industry sectors: Meat, Fish, Milk & Dairy, Wine, Fruit & Vegetables and Food Distribution. The problems, here presented, are expressed in the percentage of companies from the sample where it was identified, being the pipe insulation in poor condition or non-existent the one most found with presence in 82% of the sample.
The main goal of this paper is to show that energy audits should be seen as a way of reducing energy waste, increasing energy efficiency and improving competitiveness because they allow the detection of several issues in the facilities, as well as the respective energy saving measures.
