Refroidisseur de lait instantané utilisant le propane et, soit un coulis de glace, soit un bac à glace conventionnel.

Instant milk-cooling system utilising propane and either ice slurry or traditional ice bank.

Résumé

This paper concerns 2 novel milk-cooling concepts with a capacity of 14 400 and 16 000 litres of milk every 48 hours. The objective of the cooling concepts is to obtain instant cooling of the milk, to improve the logistics of milk collection at the farm sites, to lower the bacteriological growth prior to collection and to lower the environmental impact by only using natural refrigerants. The milk should be 4 °C at the time of collection. In the instant cooling concept, the milk has been chilled to 4 °C within 30 seconds after milking. Both systems have a precooler that heats drinking water for cows and cools the milk down to approximately 18 °C. When the milk has left the precooler, the milk is pumped into a second cooler where the milk is cooled down to 4 °C. In the first system, the second cooler is supplied with brine from an ice slurry storage tank and in the other system the second cooler is supplied with brine from a traditional ice bank. In both systems propane is applied as primary refrigerant.
