Summary

Regulations on ozone depleting substances and fluorinated-gases (f-gases) finally pay off. Despite more than a doubling of the refrigerant bank over the past 10 years, CO2eq emissions have already decreased substantially by more than 13%. For the coming 20 years, the study predicts a further emission reduction between 15% and 60% whilst assuming continuous market growth. Realised by the French research bodies ARMINES and ERIE and commissioned by the industry association European Partnership for Energy and the Environment (EPEE – www.epeeglobal.org ), the study looks at two future scenarios: The “F-Gas Scenario” based on the full implementation of the F-Gas Regulation combined with current market trends and the “F-Gas Plus Scenario” taking into account a more aggressive introduction of lower GWP refrigerants. The results clearly show that the F-Gas Regulation’s containment principle has already started to deliver. The “F-Gas Plus Scenario” illustrates the industry’s potential to go even further. Besides the introduction of lower GWP refrigerants, several key factors contribute to achieving the reductions, among them the improvement of emission rates, lower refrigerant charges and higher recovery efficiency at end of life.
