A BEMS-integrated electronic expansion valve for real-time optimisation of refrigeration evaporation.

Author(s) : FINN D. P., DOYLE C. J.

Summary

Recently, the emergence of electronic expansion valves (EEV) has provided an alternative approach to control. In this paper, the development of a custom-built EEV is described. The EEV is based on an algorithm controlled pulse actuated solenoid valve which is integrated with a Building Energy Management System (BEMS). Optimisation of refrigerant expansion is achieved through PID control of evaporator superheat. Algorithm tuning issues are examined. Extensive experimental testing has been carried out for both transient and steady state conditions.
