A generalized coefficient of performance for air conditioning.

Summary

The authors examine the work required to condition air from one state to another. A generalized coefficient of performance is defined to describe the minimum work required relative to the change in energy, including both sensible and latent effects. Performance limits are described for a variety of processes representing each psychrometric process path direction. Work related to sensible and latent conditioning portions of the paths are described as well. In some cases, work may be produced by the ideal "air conditioner" while other paths require work energy input.
