A generalized modelling approach for active electrocaloric regenerators.

Summary

Caloric materials exhibit a reversible temperature change when exposed to an external field, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional refrigeration and heat-pumping systems. Among these, electrocaloric materials are particularly attractive due to the ease of applying electric fields through electrodes. However, their adiabatic temperature change of a few Kelvins limits practical applications. The temperature span of electrocaloric devices can be enhanced by implementing active regeneration. Although prototypes have demonstrated the potential of this approach, a numerical model is required to predict system behaviour and enable systematic optimization of parameters influencing performance prior to construction. Here, we present a generalized numerical modelling framework for electrocaloric active regenerators that allows flexible modification of device geometry, materials, operating and boundary conditions, enabling systematic design optimization and performance prediction. A representative case study investigating various active electrocaloric regenerator geometries, materials, and operating conditions demonstrates the capabilities, effectiveness, and advantages of the presented framework.
