A note on surface heat transfer coefficients.

Summary

Surface heat transfer is usually evaluated on the assumption of an attained boundary layer condition. If the time for boundary layer formation is long compared with the time interval relevant to the calculation, such as the 0.2 s laser soldering of small components, the state of formation of the surface layer can be critical. Rather than involve a calculation through the surface environment, the author has evolved a method which produces a condition related to surface temperature and surface flux. A similar method can be applied to a diffusion problem. D.W.H.
