Summary

Medium pressure variable air volume is perhaps the most common form of commercial office air conditioning system using a common supply air temperature (SAT). Two major design challenges emerge for a system serving a typical office floor. The load in the centre zone is a relatively constant cooling load. Even so, it is unusual for the centre zone load to be high enough to produce an acceptable air circulation rate. Further, no reliable method has been established for raising the SAT at times of low perimeter zone loads. The consequence is excessive reheat and resultant running cost penalties. This paper investigates solutions for both these deficiencies and in so doing develops a novel approach for variable air volume air conditioning systems.
