Summary

Liquid-solid transformation and especially supercooling (delay in crystallization) of changing-phase materials encapsulated in spherical nodules are studied, with an application to energy storage through low-temperature latent heat, called cold storage. The random behaviour of crystallization calls for a statistical study. Several sets of nodules are tested with various nucleating agents to reduce supercooling. A model was constructed to determine the energy flow exchanged by the nodules during cooling. Following nucleation laws, the author took into account the stochastic character introduced by the probability of crystallization of a nodule per unit time (experimentally determined). This model is adapted to the fusion case. Even though the hypotheses neglect convective phenomena, the match with experimental curves is promising.
