Summary

Helium is the substance that is most suited to obtaining low temperatures and to their industrial and scientific applications. The author introduces this simple substance. After a brief historical review, he describes its use in industry, particularly as concerns resources, production, consumption and distribution. He then describes the use of helium in the following areas: welding, cryogenics, pressurization and purging, controlled atmospheres, breathable atmospheres for deep diving, inflation of balloons, heat transfer, leak detection, chromographic analysis.
