Author(s) : BOURICHE M.

Type of article: Periodical article

Summary

In an interview, a specialist from the Research Centre of the Army Health Department (Grenoble, France) explains the physiological mechanisms of human organism reactions to cold exposure. He distinguishes: a local adaptation (which is the same among all the subjects), an instantaneous reaction leading to an equilibrium in which the internal organ temperature is protected to the detriment of the body periphery. Also a general adaptation (varying with the subjects) depending on metabolic and/or hypothermal reactions, according to the type and intensity of exposure. The author mentions current levels of knowledge about factors which govern these types of cold adaptation and the research he considers desirable. J.R.
