Advanced compressor for long-life cryocoolers.

Summary

The paper demonstrates the potential advantages (high reliability, low weight, long life) of a hermetically sealed diaphragm-type compressor that provides hermetic separation of the gas cycle from the drive system. To accomplish this objective, a "proof of concept" compressor was designed, built, and tested. It was intended that the compressor be utilized to drive a 30 K, 0.5 watt orifice pulse tube cryocooler requiring 250 watts of pressure-volume power that was being designed at the time by the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST).
