Summary

MINOR DESIGN MODIFICATIONS OF A CONVENTIONAL SINGLE-PHASE INDUCTION, SQUIRREL-CAGE MOTOR RESULTED IN HIGHER POWER EFFICIENCY OF MOTORS, LOWER THERMAL LOSSES, AND BETTER UTILIZATION OF THEMAGNETIC CIRCUIT. IMPORTANT CHANGES WERE MADE IN THE AUXILIARY PHASE WINDING BY USING A BIFILAR COIL. AS A NEW STARTING ELEMENT, THE PTC THERMISTOR IN SERIES WITH THE AUXILIARY PHASE COIL AND IN PARALLEL WITH THE MAIN PHASE, IS NOW USED. THE OVERALL POWER EFFICIENCY OF THE MOTOR HAS BEEN IMPROVED, THE POWER CONSUMPTION REDUCED. WITH THE PTC THERMISTOR, A MINIMUM NECESSARY COOLING-DOWN TIME MUST BE DETERMINED ; THIS TIME ALSO DETERMINES THE SHORTEST TIME OF THE OFF-CYCLE.
