Advantages and disadvantages of the different concepts of multi-temperature compartments in a refrigerated vehicle.

Author(s) : VALENTIN B.

Summary

The development of the multi-compartment refrigerated transported box, on trucks and trailers with different temperature set points during the last 10 years has been done using different design concept principles which have advantages and disadvantages. The aim of the article is to describe these different principles, using different energies as refrigerant direct expansion, refrigerant hot gas and/or electrical heating power, with or without heat recovery and different control systems. The distribution of these energies must be managed by sophisticated algorithms and mechanical devices to dispense these energies at the right amount and right time in the different box compartments. The multi-temperature applications are now essential in the transportation market in Europe, for example, 30 to 40% of the refrigerated trucks and 15 to 20% of the trailers are delivered in multi-temperature in 2 or 3 compartments and the percentage is increasing each year. The selection of the best design concept has been important to obtain the best results in quality of the control of the temperature, reliability and simplicity. The advantages and the disadvantages are developed and compared for the best selection.
